Cooling
temperatures, dark-grey rainy days, wind warnings and our first sight of fresh
snow, on the mountain tops on October 5th, are Mother Nature’s way
of letting us know that winter is on its way to Clayoquot Wilderness Resort. Additionally, the movement of migratory birds
lets us know that the seasons are changing. On October 3rd, we were pleased to
see a small flock of geese in our hay fields. At first glance, we thought Canadian Geese, because that is the species
that stopped here in previous years. We
quickly corrected ourselves as we realized that we had a growing flock of
Greater White-Fronted Geese, also known as Speckled Belly.
The birds stop here and graze on grasses in
our hay fields to refuel on nutrients before the next leg of their voyage. Our hay fields are not only beneficial to
geese, but also to other wildlife such as bears, deer and elk which, in turn,
attract the predators, cougars and wolves. You can look forward to seeing more wildlife photos soon.

Winter is coming to Whistler too. Until the ski season opens, we're going in the backcountry and doing a little snowshoeing. Lots of great wildlife here too.
Cheers,
Dan
